Both the men and women of the Surf Life Saving movement rescue numerous surfers every year and contribute significantly to the cultural image of Australia abroad. The reputation of Australia’s surfers is renowned and they have taken out many world and national championships. For larger and more challenging waves, Maroubra Beach is the location, whilst beaches at La Perouse, Clovelly and Coogee tend to provide a calmer environment for swimming and surfing.

Surf Locations:

Maroubra Beach – “Dunny Bowl” Consistent swells come from the North or South. Both left & right beach breaks, sets driven by an east or north-easterly swell.

Coogee Beach – Inconsistent, only works in large swells, best when winds are NW – SW.

Wedding Cake Island – “The Southie” In big swells waves are produced by the small reef at the southern end of the beach. The perimeter of the island itself can be ridden in medium to bigger swells.

Malabar – Works only in big storms and swells. Usually best when the other beaches are too big or closed out. Check out the “Pumphouse” around the cliffs heading back towards Maroubra.
